Kanyakumari and Poovar in One Day: A Practical Plan

Kanyakumari and Poovar sit about 60 km apart on either side of the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. One is famous for sunrise over three seas, the other for quiet mangrove backwaters. With an early start, you can enjoy both in a single comfortable day.

Which comes first?

If you are staying in Kanyakumari, start with the sunrise and finish at Poovar in the afternoon – the backwaters glow at sunset. If you are staying in Trivandrum or Kovalam, you can reverse it: Poovar in the morning, Kanyakumari for the evening, though you will miss the famous sunrise.

Morning: Kanyakumari

The drive and stops

The drive to Poovar takes around 1.5–2 hours. Two good stops on or near the way:

Pick one stop rather than both if you want an unhurried afternoon on the water.

Afternoon: Poovar

Board a roofed boat for 1.5–2 hours through the Neyyar river, narrow canals and mangroves, past Elephant Rock and the Mother Mary shrine, out to the estuary and the golden sand beach. Late afternoon light makes this the most photogenic part of the day.

Then drive back to your hotel in Kanyakumari, Kovalam or Trivandrum. See our Kanyakumari to Poovar day tour for the full plan with car and driver.
