Most Poovar trips use one of two boats: a roofed motor boat or a slower, wooden-style shikara. Both cover the same backwaters, but the experience is quite different. Here is how to choose.
The roofed motor boat
A motor boat covers more water in less time. In a typical 1.5–2 hour trip it can reach most of the route: the Neyyar river, the AVM canal, the mangroves, Elephant Rock, the estuary and the golden sand beach. The roof keeps off sun and drizzle, and it suits families who want to see everything.
The shikara
A shikara is slower and quieter, sitting lower on the water. It slips easily into the narrow canals and mangrove tunnels, where birds are less disturbed – kingfishers, herons and kites are easier to spot and photograph. It suits couples, photographers and anyone who prefers a calm ride.
Side by side
| Motor boat / Shikara | |
| Pace | Brisk / Slow and quiet |
| Route | Wider loop, more stops / Canals and mangroves |
| Birds & photos | Good / Best |
| Best for | Families, groups, first-timers / Couples, photographers, slow travellers |
Sunrise, sunset or midday?
Early morning brings calm water and the most birds. Late afternoon gives warm light and sunset colours over the estuary. Midday is fine under a roof, though the beach stop is hotter.
Private and premium options
For a proposal, anniversary or a family with elderly guests, a private shikara lets you set the pace and the route. You can also add a floating-restaurant lunch to any trip. See all options on our Poovar backwater tour page.
Whichever boat you choose, everyone gets a life jacket, boats are Govt. certified and drivers are licensed.
