Poovar is the quiet end of Trivandrum’s coastline – a fishing village where the Neyyar river winds through mangroves to a sandbar on the Arabian Sea. It is close enough to the city for a half-day trip. Here is how to get there and how to spend the time.
How far is Poovar from Trivandrum?
Poovar is about 30 km south of Trivandrum city and roughly 15 km beyond Kovalam. On a normal day the drive takes around an hour from the city centre and 30–40 minutes from Kovalam. Early mornings are quicker; late afternoons on weekends are slower, especially around Vizhinjam.
The route
Most drivers head out of the city towards Kovalam, then continue south past Vizhinjam on the road towards Kanyakumari. The last stretch runs between coconut groves with glimpses of the backwaters on your right. The boat jetties sit along the Neyyar river near the Poovar check post area.
Ways to get there
- Car with driver (easiest). You are picked up at your hotel, the driver waits while you are on the water, and you are dropped back – no parking or bargaining at the jetty.
- Self-drive. Straightforward, but parking near the jetties fills up on weekends and holidays.
- Bus. KSRTC buses run from Thampanoor and East Fort towards Poovar. Cheap, but slower, and you still need to get from the bus stop to a boat jetty.
If you are coming from the station, it helps to choose a pickup that keeps your bags in the car during the boat trip – see our Trivandrum to Poovar day trip.
A half-day plan
- 8:30 AM – Pickup from your hotel or Thiruvananthapuram Central.
- 9:30 AM – Reach Poovar and board a roofed motor boat or shikara.
- 9:45 AM–11:30 AM – On the water: Neyyar river, the AVM canal, mangrove tunnels, Elephant Rock and the estuary.
- 11:30 AM – Golden sand beach – step onto the sandbar between the backwaters and the sea.
- 12:30 PM – Lunch at a floating restaurant (optional), then drive back.
Prefer the evening? Start after lunch and time the boat for sunset over the estuary. The rest of the plan stays the same.
Tips
- Carry sunscreen, water and a hat – the boats have roofs, but the beach stop does not.
- Wear sandals; you may step onto wet sand at the beach.
- Keep phones in a pouch near the estuary, where it can get breezy and splashy.
- Book ahead on weekends and in December–January, when boats and cars are busiest.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Poovar from Trivandrum railway station?
About 30 km – roughly an hour by road, depending on traffic.
Is Poovar worth a half-day trip?
Yes. The mangroves, the estuary and the golden sand beach are unlike anything in the city, and half a day is enough to enjoy them.
Can I visit Kovalam on the same trip?
Yes – Kovalam is on the way, so it is easy to add a beach or lighthouse stop.
